On this weeks episode, Timmy Patterson talks about his dad moving from Oahu to San Diego in 1956/57, becoming part of the Windansea crew, and then eventually moving up to Dana Point. He got a job at Hobie Surfboards, and at one point, Timmy’s dad and both his uncles were sanding, laminating, and doing pin lines at the Hobie factory.

Timmy was born and raised in Dana Point and to this day, he still lives literally ten houses from where he grew up, which I gotta say, is so cool.

He grew up surfing Doheny and Poche and shaped his first surfboard in the family garage in 1979. He got that first blank from Brad Basham; in the same building Timmy has now worked out of for 30 years. He talks about shaping for Christian, Archy, and Dino back in the day, and how much he loves every aspect of surfboard production from start to finish all the way down to the lost art of glass-on fins.

He shares how he quit working at Hobie to go work for Chris McElroy, and we also dive into all the talent that came out of San Clemente both surfers and shapers. We talk about Randy Sleigh, and how he and Chris McElroy were absolute rock star shapers.

We also talk about Timmy’s riders today, including World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Italo Ferreira, and Alan Cleland Jr., along with so many other talents from this hotbed of surfing like Kolohe, Griff, Crosby, Cole, and more.

I asked him about his top five surfers of all time, and we talk about the classic, highly influential surf flick Free Ride and the impact it had on all of us at the time.

He tells me stories about his grandpa shaping boards in the 1940s, stories Walter Hoffman passed down to him. And now, Timmy’s son Keone is shaping alongside him, making it four generations of surfboard builders. Such a legacy, such a Patterson family tradition.

He talks about traveling the world with his son, shaping boards in places like the Canary Islands, Portugal, Brazil, Bali, and Hawaii.

And, of course, we talk about seeing the stoke in the eyes of the groms and how he wants to keep that stoke alive by surfing and shaping every single day.

For Timmy Patterson, it’s all about sharing the stoke and I gotta say, I couldn’t be more stoked to share this episode with you, my friends.
